Directed by Leila Conners and Michelle Vey, each video in the series is under ten minutes long, and succinctly dissects many important issues connected to sustainability in fashion. Valletta interviews Suzy Amis of Red Carpet Green Dress and her husband director James Cameron, designer and CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg, supermodel and women’s rights advocate Christy Turlington, and other key players in the fashion industry. The failures and weaknesses of the fashion industry’s current production model are exposed, and real solutions are put forth as viable alternatives to drive real change in the industry. The series covers environmentally-friendly textiles that are in use or currently in development, zero waste and other sustainable design techniques, and recycling the massive amounts of textile waste that normally end up in landfills. They also discuss the timelessness and longevity of classic designs, the wastefulness of seasonal trends, and the importance of responsible consumerism. The poor and sometimes dangerous working conditions of employees in the garment industry are also thoughtfully addressed in an interview with Charles Kernagahan, the Executive Director of the Institute for Global Labor and Human Rights. Driving Fashion Forward was produced by L Studio, a platform created by Lexus that features original works of art, culture, design, science, entertainment and architecture. Series directors Leila Conners and Michelle Vey and host Amber Valletta are also behind other interesting environmental projects. Vey directed the 2013 documentary Thread, a more in-depth view on the fallibility of today’s current fashion production processes, and the new and innovative solutions that will usher in a new age for the industry. Conners directed The 11th Hour, a film produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio for the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. Valletta recently launched Master & Muse, a curated collection of eco-friendly goods, in collaboration with YOOX. She is also the current face of H&M’s Conscious Collection.Click here to view the four-part series Driving Fashion Forward.
