Fort Makers is an artist collective that creates works of art presented in the form of everyday objects. The collective makes functional and interactive art such as fashion, home decor items and large-scale public art installations. Fort Makers was co-founded by Nana Spears, Noah James Spencer, and Naomi Clark, and artist Elizabeth Whitcomb joined in 2012. Each Fort Makers creation represents the unique style of the artist, coupled with the energy and inspiration of the group. The collective creates clothing, jewelry, scarves, home textiles, decorative objects, wall hangings, LED lights and furniture. Fort Makers even constructed actual forts that were displayed in Big Bend National Park in Texas, a brownstone in Brooklyn, the DUMBO Arts Festival in NYC, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Duncan House in Polymath Park, Pennsylvania. Fort Markers has a women’s fashion line called The Dress Project that is manufactured in New York City. For the range, artist Naomi Clark paints unique and vibrant compositions onto fabrics which are then transformed into dresses and scarves. The scarves are made with silk and silk-fringed cotton, and many have been cut from a single composition so that each one reflects the specific color palettes and painting styles of the original work. The jewelry pieces are crafted by Elizabeth Whitcomb using wax moldings and shiny sterling silver. Whitcomb’s nature-inspired collection has a primitive feel, and the artist sometimes leaves fingerprints on certain pieces to underscore the raw and organic character of her work. The home textiles collection features unique designs by Naomi Clark that have been digitally printed or hand-painted onto crisp cotton canvas and linen-cotton blend fabrics, while the home decor objects are made from cherry, ash, zebra, apple, maple, walnut, oak and wenge woods. Fort Makers has an online shop where you will find a varied selection of their creations, including several natural milled leather pouches and bags that were hand-painted by Naomi Clark in collaboration with BAGGU. Fort Makers creations are also sold at select retailers in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
