Linda Mai Phung is a sustainable fashion label based in Ho Chi Minh City

Linda Mai Phung is a French fashion designer whose eponymous label is based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Phung creates wearable separates that are feminine and elegant, and that strike a balance between Asian and European aesthetics. The collections are made with eco-friendly textiles such as G.O.T.S certified organic cotton, silk that is produced in Vietnam by blackberry bush worms, locally sourced leathers, traditional textiles handcrafted by minority tribes in Asia, eco-friendly and hypoallergenic linen, and upcycled plastic bags from Saigon’s food factories. All of the brand’s garments are meticulously handmade by skilled tailors who are paid fair wages, and also by victims of prostitution who are trained to sew by a Vietnamese social enterprise. Each season, Phung draws inspiration from her voyages and incorporates her travel experiences and international textiles into her collections. The origami details of the AW14 collection, for example, were inspired by a trip to Japan. A visit to Saigon inspired the collection’s graphic city map print which was drawn by Japanese artist Ayano Otan. The SS14 collection was an homage to Frida Kahlo with silk patchwork blouses, cutout dresses, and tribal textiles, while the cloud-camouflage print (shown above) was directly inspired by one of Yoko Ono’s art works. Linda Mai Phung graduated in 2007 from Duperre School of Art in Paris with a degree in Fashion Design, before going on to work for various trend forecasting studios, independent designers, luxury fashion houses, and fashion magazines in Paris, Berlin and Prague. She also exhibited at the gallery Premiere Station at the Louvre, and won the “Paris Jeunes Aventures” grant to fund a photo-documentary about crafts in Vietnam. She launched the Linda Mai Phung brand in 2010 and presented her first collection in 2011. Since then, Phung has won many prestigious awards including the Eco-fashion Designer Award by Néoplanète Magazine, the Creativity Prize of the Ethical Fashion Show in Paris, and the Innovation Source Award 2012 of the Ethical Fashion Forum. Today, Phung designs her collections in Paris, Ho Chi Minh City, and Shanghai.
